The Agafay Desert is not a sand-dune Sahara, but rather an expansive rocky mineral desert plateau (known in Morocco as a reg) spread across rolling sandstone hills. Situated a relatively short drive southwest of Marrakech, it offers a refreshing escape into vast open space with unobstructed views stretching toward the High Atlas peaks.

Because the Agafay sits relatively close to the city, it makes for a convenient afternoon excursion. As the sun lowers toward the horizon, the pale stone hills take on warmer tones. The open space of the desert provides a quiet contrast to the bustle of central Marrakech.
