Ourika Valley
Berber villages, riverside trails and cool mountain air just beyond Marrakech.
Ascend into Morocco's grandest mountain range on a private day journey exploring dramatic alpine valleys, hillside Berber settlements, and panoramic viewpoints beneath towering Atlas summits.
Rising abruptly from the Haouz plain south of Marrakech, the High Atlas Mountains form the dramatic spine of Morocco. This private excursion takes you past the gateway town of Tahnaout and through the Moulay Brahim Gorges into the higher alpine valleys of Asni and Imlil, nestled beneath the shadows of North Africa's highest peak, Mount Toubkal.
Unlike shorter excursions confined to a single valley, this journey offers a broader perspective of the High Atlas. You will observe terraced agricultural plots irrigated by mountain streams, ancient stone-and-mud villages clinging to steep cliff sides, and daily rural life unchanged for generations.
Traveling with private transport allows complete flexibility. You can stop at roadside scenic viewpoints overlooking high mountain passes, explore mountain village centers at your leisure, take an optional guided walk through walnut orchards with a local village guide, or relax with a warm mint tea taking in clean mountain air.
Your driver meets you at your Marrakech hotel or riad. Leave the city behind and travel south past olive orchards toward the dramatic wall of the High Atlas.
Ascend through limestone gorges into the valley of Asni with views of orchard terraces. Depending on the day and route, a local market stop may be possible.
Continue upward along the winding mountain road to Imlil (1,740m). Marvel at the amphitheater of towering rocky peaks that surround this classic mountain village.
Enjoy free time in the village center. You may choose an optional walk with a local village guide to explore surrounding trails and scenic viewpoints.
Take time for an optional lunch at a mountain cafe or guesthouse before a comfortable late afternoon drive back down through the foothills to Marrakech.
